When commercial astronaut Chris Sembroski looked back at Earth from the SpaceX Inspiration4 capsule in 2021, the world’s first all-civilian orbital mission, neither of us expected it to change how we think about office lighting. But the Overview Effect does something specific to you: it makes the invisible visible. Even though Chris was physically separated from Earth, he was more drawn to our planet than ever before. At this year’s NeoCon, Janet Simpson, President of TVS, noted that cognitive research is reshaping design at every scale, including lighting calibrated to circadian rhythms, with acoustic and sensory elements working together rather than in isolation. That is a major architecture firm president stating circadian supportive lighting as an established design driver, unprompted. Not a niche claim. A given.

The industry has agreed that circadian supportive lighting matters. What it has not agreed on is how to keep it in the drawings when the value engineering conversation begins..

Every commercial project pursuing wellness certification has a value engineering review. Intelligent lighting, designed to support circadian health, is one of the most commonly cut line items. The designer presents a specification. The cost consultant presents a spreadsheet. The specification loses. Not because it is wrong. Because nobody in that room has translated it into the financial language the decision requires.

The human cost lives in the building, in the occupants who sleep poorly because the light they sat under all day suppressed their melatonin at the wrong time, and in the office workers whose cognitive performance quietly eroded across a decade under a spectrum that nobody ever questioned.

When someone finally runs the numbers, the results are striking. A $115,000 intelligent lighting specification, cut to save money, eliminates over $1,000,000 in measurable lifetime productivity and healthcare savings for a 100-person office. The payback on the right specification is eleven months. The return ratio is 9:1. This is arithmetic derived from published research in occupational health and real estate economics. Every designer who walks into a value engineering review should know how to make it.

The broader industry is converging. Philips, the Good Light Group and the IWBI’s Healthy Workplaces Coalition are each making the same case from different directions. NeoCon’s new Illuminate pavilion debuted this year with more than 60 lighting exhibitors, establishing lighting as a permanent, structural presence at the largest commercial interiors event in North America. The premise has been accepted. What has not been built is the financial infrastructure to protect it at the moment it comes under threat.

What the Overview Effect gave Chris, and what working together at the intersection of photonics, circadian science and the built environment has given us both, is the same recognition: the systems that shape human biology are largely invisible until something makes them visible. For Chris, it was the view from orbit. For the design industry, it may be the moment a designer walks into a value engineering review and speaks in the language of Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and lifecycle cost rather than melanopic lux and circadian stimulus.

The industry now speaks the language of circadian supportive lighting fluently. The next conversation, the one that determines whether that language survives contact with a cost consultant, has not happened yet.

That is the conversation worth having.
