Dansko—the renowned comfort footwear brand—unveiled its first branded retail concept outside its Pennsylvania headquarters, partnering with Footwise to launch Dansko, a Footwise Concept in Portland, Oregon’s Sellwood neighborhood. The 1,500 square foot space is more than a retail store; it is a curated expression of Dansko’s equestrian heritage, a nod to its Pennsylvania roots, and a modern “third space” designed for community connection. At the center of this transformation is a carefully selected hardwood floor that does far more than support foot traffic—it helps tell the Dansko story.

According to Christina Sewell, Director of Marketing at Dansko, the goal was clear: “We knew we wanted to create a space that felt distinctly Dansko—the minute someone walked through the door, they needed to feel the warmth, comfort, and authenticity that defines our brand.” Sellwood was a natural fit. With its walkable streets, independent businesses, and community focused vibe, the neighborhood echoes the charming Pennsylvania towns that shaped Dansko’s identity.
While the Portland store maintains the brand’s roots, it also represents a fresh venture: Dansko’s first concept shop developed with a retail partner. The location showcases 200+ products—well beyond what typical retailers carry. Footwise manages daily operations, while Dansko controls customer experience and visual identity, ensuring the brand’s values are reflected in every detail.
Flooring as a Foundational Design Choice
From the beginning, flooring was central to the store’s aesthetic and functional vision. The design team wanted the space to subtly reference the warm, lived-in feel of a Pennsylvania horse barn, a nod to the company’s founding more than 30 years ago on a farm. “Our origin story is deeply rooted in that equestrian feel—leather, wood, craftsmanship—so it was essential the materials reflected that,” Sewell explains.
The chosen hardwood floor anchors the entire environment, adding warmth, depth, and an authentic sense of place. Its tone and texture inspired additional material choices throughout the store, helping create a cohesive experience.

From Flooring to Furniture:
Sewell, drawing on her background in interior materials, led the store’s design herself—creating a contemporary yet infused heritage atmosphere. The white oak floors are complemented by custom shelving in matching tones, metal accents that nod to the Pacific Northwest’s mid-century influence, and leather furniture reminiscent of equestrian tack rooms. The blend of natural materials, modern lines, and warm textures supports the store’s role as a “third space”—a place where customers can gather, linger, and feel connected.
This intentional mix of elements results in a space that feels both elevated and approachable. The store is designed not only for product discovery but for community engagement, reflecting Dansko’s long-standing focus on comfort and authenticity.

Local Roots, National Vision
Dansko’s partnership with Armstrong Flooring(R) reflects more than a design decision—it represents shared values. Both companies are Pennsylvania based and committed to U.S. manufacturing and sustainability. “It was important to us to work with another company from our backyard,” Sewell says. “There’s a shared ethos in doing things the right way—with care, with quality, and with purpose.”
This alignment strengthened the store’s narrative, grounding the Portland location in a sense of place that reaches across state lines, connecting Dansko’s beginnings with its future.

A Model for What Comes Next
As Footwise explores expanding the concept to additional markets, the Portland store now serves as a prototype for how Dansko’s brand story can be translated into retail environments. Every element—from the hardwood planks beneath each step to the carefully crafted shelving above—demonstrates a commitment to authenticity, comfort, sustainability, and community.
The result is a retail experience that is unmistakably Dansko: warm, grounded, and built with purpose.
